Use data and technologies to better understand how parks are used and valued by citizens

Background

Urban Parks play a significant role in improving people’s quality of life. The visualization and chatbot are integrated into this website, aiming at further understanding the relationship between city residents and urban parks.



Interactive Visualization was designed on the basis of the user research conducted in four parks in Edinburgh: Inverleith Park, Leith Links, The Meadows & Bruntsfield Links and Saughton Park.

In addition, a research chatbot was designed to gather data from park users, people are welcome to chat with Alfred and share their information, activities and feedback, making contributions to the improvement of urban parks.

Park Users

Among 228 respondents, 48.4% are female, 38.6% are male, and the remaining is unknown. The majority of respondents are aged 20-40. As for the residence, the most common postcodes are EH3 and EH6.

Activities

When asked what you usually do in the park, most respondents said they like to sitting and watching park activities or doing exercise or dog-walking.


Sitting and Watching: 19.73%

Eating/ picnic/ BBQ: 8.49%

Gathering with friends/ family: 8.22%

Feedback

What do you value most? Aspects of parks that are commonly valued inlude: Large open space, nature and greenery, and well-maintained.

The improvement people would like to see mainly on bins and toilets in four parks, and they also want more picni/BBQ space and more exercise facilities.

The dashboard of each park fully and accurately presents all data from user research including the response rate of each survey questions.
